‘Journey’ captures the essence of new wave Jazz Funk with it’s infectious joyful baseline, dynamic melodies and striking brass accents prominent throughout. Bringing the live energy to this dancefloor heater, a pure groove-led refreshing experience that will leave you ready to dance around the globe. Spreading that uplifting vital soul sound, transcending space and time, inviting you into the effervescent world of Secret Night Gang.

Arranged by music prodigies Kemani Anderson and Callum Connell at Spirit Studio in Manchester, ‘Journey’ leads with a funk laden bassline and hypnotising chords created by Stuart and Kemani’s groove explorations in local jam sessions, developed further in rehearsal sessions. When Callum returned to Manchester, inspired by Herbie Hancock’s Jazz Funk legacy, both he and Kemani wrote the lyrics and finessed the composition.

Reminiscent of explosive power funk orchestras, ‘Journey’ was created in the spirit of bands such as Brainstorm, Wood, Brass & Steel and early Earth, Wind & Fire. As Gilles Peterson shares, “For me it’s an extraordinary level of musical competence at such a young age. It’s incredibly complete music, tight arrangements and with far reaching musical ambition.”

Secret Night Gang’s new second single ‘Journey’ is released across all digital streaming platforms on Friday 21st May 2021.

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
